Abacus
Before there was the calculator, people used
the abacus for basic math and accounting. An abacus is still useful for parents
and teachers to help children learn how to count, how to add and subtract.
Abacus is a
mathematical tool. We can use this tool in Arithmetic such as addition,
subtraction multiplication, etc. It helps the children to understand
mathematics easily and increase their confidence and capability.
How
To Make Abacus – You can make your own at home with
basic materials found at a craft store.
Take
a (“6*3”) rectangular thermocol piece. In the middle along the length, fix a
cardboard of (“6*4”) vertically. Now fix five wires from one end to other end
at equal distance. Each wire will form inverted ‘U’ shape, in which one end is
in front side of the card board and the other is on the back side of the
cardboard. Each wire will be provided 10 rolling beads of different colours.
Now on the base of thermocol write ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and lastly
ten thousands from left to write direction. Now our Abacus is ready to
use.
Use of Abacus
1.
Simply increase the value of
the bead from one on each column.
2.
The first column represents 0-9 with
the value of 1 for each bead.
3.
The next represents 0-90 and value of
each bead is 10.
4.
The third column with 0-900 with
the value of 100 for each bead.
5.
Similarly, the fourth column with
0-9000 with the value of 1000 for each bead.
